The time of year has come once again for Bermuda’s insurance industry to pack up shop for a couple days and delve itself into the island’s vibrant culture. Unique to Bermuda is the special relationship corporates share with the island, where connections extend beyond business. The Bermudian Cup Match is a prime example. This historic cricket event symbolises the proud principles Bermuda is built on. Representing sportsmanship, history, and cultural pride, It offers an opportunity for everyone to enjoy the island’s unique traditions.

Located deep in the Atlantic, Bermuda’s rich history was established due to its convenient location and climate. Today, the island stands as a global leader in the insurance industry, thanks to its geography, regulatory environment, and financial benefits. However, it will not be forgotten that the privileges businesses like ours are fortunate to have, were built on others struggles and triumphs. This acknowledgment is central to the spirit of celebration during this time in Bermuda. The festivities honour both the island’s progress as well as pay tribute to the resilience and courage of those who helped shape its present.

Nowhere else in the world does a country celebrate a cricket game quite like Bermuda. Officially starting in 1902, Cup Match embodies Bermuda’s heritage and community spirit. Its roots, however, date back to August 1, 1834, when Black Bermudians formed friendly societies to support each other and celebrate freedom. These gatherings evolved into cricket matches between the west (Somerset) and east (St Goerge’s) ends of the island.

The first official Cup Match was exceptionally tight, seeing both sides score a total of 73 runs. Remarkably in this game, Joe Brangman reportedly took all 10 wickets of the opposing team. For more history on the event look at the timeline below which highlights some key moments in the history of Cup Match.
